Could Microsoft, Amazon, or Google Actually Buy Reddit?
Reddit (RDDT) shares have fallen 32% year to date despite 61% revenue growth, putting its $30 billion market cap within reach of several tech giants.
Microsoft (MSFT) and Amazon (AMZN) emerge as the two most viable suitors, with Microsoft offering OpenAI synergies and Amazon leveraging Reddit's high-intent shopping conversations.
Super-voting Class B shares held by CEO Steve Huffman mean any acquisition requires insider consent, keeping Reddit independent without founder blessing.

There is no announced or rumored deal for Reddit (NYSE:RDDT). But with shares down 32.5% year to date to $155.26 despite 61.1% revenue growth and a $1.25 EPS that topped consensus by 29.23%, the question of who could own the internet's largest repository of authentic human conversation is worth asking. Steve Huffman framed the strategic asset plainly: "AI compresses the internet into summaries. Reddit delivers the opposite: deep discussions, passionate debates, and lived experiences."
At a $29.9 billion market cap, Reddit is affordable for every name below. The bigger obstacle is governance: Co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman, largest shareholder Advance/Newhouse, and others hold super-voting Class B stock, so any bid needs insider blessing.
Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) has the community-adjacency logic and $1.5 trillion in market value to pay any price. It also carries the highest antitrust risk of any bidder. Adding another social graph to Facebook and Instagram would draw immediate FTC attention. Realistic odds: very low.
Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) already licenses Reddit data for Gemini and drives a meaningful share of referral traffic. Sundar Pichai has said, "Our AI investments are redefining what's possible across every part of our business." But with the DOJ Search remedies still active, owning the site that trains its rival's models is a regulatory non-starter. A deeper licensing deal is far more likely than an acquisition.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), at a $2.9 trillion cap, has the cleanest commercial rationale. Reddit's high-intent shopping conversations, the newly generally available Shopify integration, and the roughly half of U.S. shoppers who verify AI recommendations on Reddit before buying feed directly into Amazon's ad business, which reached $19.8 billion last quarter. Antitrust risk is moderate but manageable.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has the smallest social overlap, the deepest pockets at $3.6 trillion, LinkedIn as a distribution parallel, and an OpenAI partnership hungry for authentic training data. Satya Nadella noted, "Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time." Financially and strategically, it is the tidiest fit.
A pure buyout is a stretch. Reddit's 42.6% adjusted EBITDA margin and $260.74 million in quarterly free cash flow support leverage, but the equity check at this valuation exceeds typical sponsor comfort. A minority PIPE alongside a strategic partner is more plausible.
Three things to watch are any 13D filing signaling activist involvement, changes to the Class B voting agreement, and the cadence of AI licensing renewals. The $216.35 analyst target implies Wall Street sees value that the market currently ignores. Without founder consent, however, Reddit will remain independent.
