There are many reasons an insider may sell shares in a company. One reason could be the need to raise cash to pay for a large personal expense. Another reason could be for reasonable portfolio diversification unrelated to their outlook for the company. A third reason could be what investors fear most: a bearish outlook on the company’s future.

However, there is only one reason an insider buys stock: they believe the share price is going up.

By this Wall Street rule of thumb, Mahoney’s purchase of more than $10 million of Boston Scientific shares is bullish. Adding to the bullishness is that studies show an insider purchase presages a higher share price 30 days later, more often than not.

The size of Mahoney’s purchase is significant, too. Hard data is tough to find , but very few insider purchase transactions in any one year are for more than $10 million, across the stock market, especially when you exclude investment funds and just focus on individuals.

Boston Scientific has been having a tough 2026, with management having twice cut revenue guidance due to a competitive marketplace. But the company’s future is looking brighter thanks to acquisitions that now mean the company has a robust pipeline of new products due to hit the market in 2027 through 2029. Mahoney is also leading a restructuring that promises to cut $500 million of fat from operations going into 2027.

An insider purchase of stock is no guarantee shares will go higher, but a sizable statement by a CEO like Mahoney is a signal that investors should take a close look at Boston Scientific shares.
