Insider transactions can be a great way to learn about companies that many investors are unfamiliar with. Yet, insider transactions shouldn’t be a reason for investors to buy or sell shares. That decision should come from analyzing a company’s core fundamentals. With that in mind, let’s have a closer look at Avery Dennison.

For starters, Avery Dennison stock has underperformed the broader stock market for several years. Since 2021, the stock has delivered a total return of -10%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -2.1%. That pales in comparison to the S&P 500, which has generated an 87% total return over the same period, with a 13.3% CAGR.

All that said, there are some signs that a change could be coming for the stock. The company recently released an upbeat earnings report for the second quarter. Earnings per share beat consensus estimates by about 17%, while revenue was approximately 7% above analyst expectations. What’s more, operating margins rose to around 13.3%. That’s the highest level in five years, demonstrating that the company is navigating macroeconomic headwinds well. Finally, the stock’s current price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 19.5x could signal some value. The stock’s five-year average P/E is around 23x.

In summary, value-oriented investors may be wise to take a closer look at Avery Dennison stock. Although the stock has failed to measure up to the broader market in the past, solid recent results and its low P/E could signal that the stock is poised for a turnaround.
