Americans have effectively taken a pay cut. 5 financial tools to make your dollars go further
Salaries haven't kept up with rising costs, meaning many Americans have less spending power than they did a year ago.Â
Average hourly earnings rose 3.2% year over year in July, the slowest pace in five years, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data. But inflation has outpaced that growth, increasing 3.4% over the same period, as the Iran war raises energy prices, according to the Consumer Price Index for July, which was released on Wednesday.Â
That comes as Americans are already feeling squeezed: Sixty-three percent of Americans reported living paycheck-to-paycheck, according to the CNBC and SurveyMonkey Quarterly Money Survey, released in July.
While you can't control wage growth or inflation, there are ways to stretch your money and make it work harder for you. Here are some tools and strategies CNBC Select recommends.Â

If your entire paycheck isn't immediately going to bills, a high-yield savings account can be an inflation-busting tool for your cash. Money in these accounts can earn up to 4.00% APY, meaning your money could grow faster than costs rise.Â
Here's an example: If you put $100 in a traditional savings account â which typically has a 0.38% to 0.62% yield â in July 2025, the balance in your account would be between $100.38 and $100.62 by this year.Â
But if you put the same amount in a HYSA with an APY of 4.00%, the balance in your account would be $104.08 by July of this year.
Additionally, you can easily access the funds in an HYSA, unlike other savings accounts such as a Certificate of Deposit, where your money is tied up for a set period of time.Â
HappenBank Level Up Savings offers one of the highest APYs and easy withdrawals. You'll get an ATM card that lets you access your funds whenever you need them, up to $4,000 per day. There is no minimum account balance, but you do need to deposit at least $250 to qualify for the highest APY.Â
4.00% (with monthly deposits of $250 or more), or 3.00%
If you prefer to bank with a big name, CNBC Select suggests the American Express High-Yield Savings Account, which has no withdrawal limits. Plus, this account has no minimum balance or monthly fees.Â
Read our American Express® High Yield Savings Account review.
The Annual Percentage Yield (APY) as advertised is accurate as of 7/9/2026. Interest rate and APY are subject to change at any time without notice before and after a High Yield Savings Account is opened. Interest Rate and APY of a Certificate of Deposit account is fixed once the account is funded
There is no minimum balance required to open your Account, to avoid being charged a fee, or to obtain the Annual Percentage Yield (APY) disclosed to you
For purposes of transferring funds to or from an external bank, business days are Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. Transfers can be initiated 24/7 via the website or phone, but any transfers initiated after 7:00 PM Eastern Time or on non-business days will begin processing on the next business day. Funds deposited into your account may be subject to holds. See the Funds Availability section of your Consumer Deposit Account Agreement and Savings Schedules for more information.
Another way to make your money go farther is to get the best possible deal. You can do this for everyday expenses like groceries using coupon apps.
We like Ibotta because you can download it as an app or as a browser extension. You can get cashback on purchases at 2,600 retailers, including Walmart and Trader Joe's, when you pre-select items and upload the receipt after purchase. Plus, you can download coupons for use at the store.
Activate cash-back offers and clip digital coupons to get cash back on purchases.
Download the Ibotta app or the browser extension.
Redeem cash back once you reach $20 as a deposit into your bank account, PayPal account or for gift cards.
If you need to make a purchase but don't have the cash on hand to cover it, try a credit card with a 0% APR introductory offer.Â
During the intro period â typically six to 21 months â you won't be charged interest on what you spend. Be sure you can pay the bill before the end of the introductory period so you don't start accruing interest.
We like the U.S. Bank Shield⢠Visa® Card because it offers a long 21-month intro period. On top of that, it doesn't have an annual fee.
Information about the U.S. Bank Shield⢠Visa® Card has been collected independently by CNBC Select and has not been reviewed or provided by the issuer prior to publication.
Receive a introductory APR for 21 months on balance transfers and purchases.
The U.S. Bank Shield⢠Visa® Card is a rare card that offers rewards (for limited purchases) and best-in-class intro APRs for purchases and balance transfers.
Finally, make sure you're not spending money on things you don't use. One place to start: subscriptions. The average American spends about $21 per month on subscriptions they don't use, according to a YouGov Plc survey commissioned by CNET.
Rocket Money can help you track your expenses and cancel unwanted subscriptions. While there is a free version of the app that lets users organize their accounts and track spending, the subscription cancellation feature is part of the premium version. Rocket allows users to pay what they think is fair for the service, and reported that it's typically between $7 and $14 per month.
The basic plan is free. Rocket Money Premium is $7 to $14 a month with a 7-day free trial. Bill negotiation services cost 35% to 60% of the first-year savings, if the negotiation is successful.
Easily cancel unwanted subscriptions, track your spending and credit score, automate savings and get help lowering bills. Rocket Money Premium includes additional services like net-worth tracking, credit reports and a subscription cancellation concierge service
Rocket Money accesses transaction data via an encrypted token, uses Plaid API so user credentials are never stored, provides bank-level 256-bit encryption and hosts servers on Amazon Web Services
Offered online and on both the App Store (for iOS) and on Google Play (for Android)
